WPE Evaluation Rubric and Criteria
Your Writing will be evaluated using the following Scoring Rubric. The rubric is divided into three areas of evaluation and four performance levels.
The Maximum Score is 10,
and a Passing Score is 7.

- The criteria are organized into three groups, or Focused Evaluation Areas. Each of the Evaluation Areas are weighted in order to show you the relative values and importance of the criteria that we use to assess your essay.
- Two Evaluation Areas have a weight of 40% of the score: Critical Thinking (40%); and, Critical Reading (40%).
- The third Evaluation area has a weight of 20% of the score: Writing Proficiency (20%).
- The maximum final score is 10, and the lowest passing score is 7.
- If you are required to retake the WPE, you will be given a reader's report that explains how your essay scored based on the evaluation rubric.
